Spring Home Energy Checklist

It’s spring, the season when we enjoy some relief from high seasonal utility bills to heat and cool our homes. When seasonal home heating and air conditioning isn’t needed, your utility bill reflects the impact of hot water, lighting, appliance and electronics energy loads and accounts for about 36% of your energy cost. If you still find spring energy costs make you uncomfortable, here are do it yourself solutions to lowering year-round home energy costs:

Hot Water

  1. Water Heater Temp Check & Adjustment, set water heater to 125°.
  2. Turn water heater off when leaving home for two or more days.
  3. Wash full laundry loads and use cold water.
  4. Install a water heater blanket.
  5. Install faucet aerators.
  6. Install low-flow shower heads that use 2.5 gallons per minute or less.
  7. Install water line pipe insulation for 6′ from tank.

Lighting

  1. Turn off lights when not in use.
  2. Install compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs.

Appliances and Electronics

  1. Recycle the 2nd refrigerator in your garage  to save.
  2. Turn off when not in use and use smart strips at entertainment and computer centers.
  3. Look for the Energy Star label when purchasing new appliances and electronics.

And, since summer temperatures are just around the corner, here are the no-cost strategies for keeping your cool this summer.

  1. Use ceiling fans to feel cooler in the summer (turn off when room not occupied)
  2. Set thermostat at 78° in summer, 68° in winter.
  3. Set temperature 5° warmer when not at home in summer (do not turn air conditioning off during summer vacations to avoid mold).
  4. Install programmable thermostat and program to occupant schedule. Alternate Option: Set thermostat on “auto”.
  5. Check and/or change heating and AC filter monthly.
  6. Close shades/blinds to keep direct sunlight out.
